Southern Gulf Islands
The Gulf Islands is steadily increasing capacity and programming for Early Childhood. Current partners include daycares, playgroups, and preschool on all of the five islands as well as the two toy libraries on Saltspring Island and the Family Resource Program, at Family Place. A group of early childhood development leaders meet on a bi-monthly basis with a focus of sharing information, networking, and determining community needs for distribution of resources. The Southern Gulf Islands are developing early childhood working groups or "Hubs" to plan and developed training & programming as a result of successful acquisition of Success By Six and Early Years funding.
In 2007 following a successful year of delivering a Dad "n Me Program also a Success by Six Parent-Child drop-in, Dragonfly Preschool Society was successful in acquiring independent funding to sustain these programs. For more information please contact Ragnhild Flakstad at Saltspring Community Services 250-537-9176.
The focus this year will be prioritizing community needs for early childhood as well as ensuring sustainability for existing programs; such as the toy libraries and 'Stay and Play' groups, Saltspring Island will be investigating the development of infant daycare options and the continuation of support for small grass roots programs on the outer Gulf Islands. For information or participation contact Ragnhild Flakstad at familyplace@ssics.ca
