Western Communities
Updated Oct 16, 2007
The Western Communities ECD Committee partners provide children and family services in Local Health Area #62, including the communities of Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, and Sooke to Port Renfrew. Service sectors represented on the Committee include Child and Youth Mental Health, Infant Development, Education, Library, Family Services agencies, Military Families services, Child Care Resource and Referral, Supported Child Development, and Recreation services.
Committee meets bi-monthly for networking and information sharing; working on initiatives to increase the profile of early childhood development in the Western Communities and to educate the general public on the importance and benefits of early learning opportunities for children. The next meeting is Oct. 16 from 1:30 to 3:30 at the military Family Resource Centre in Colwood on Rosedale Road off of Ocean Boulevard. You are welcome to come and provide input to a Westshore report of the early years in our community for young children and their families. The report has been compiled by the Understanding the Early Years coordinator, Stephanie Gabel. UEY is a 3 year federally funded research project in our region.
Success by Six has sponsored music classes for preschool children for the past year. They are continuing this fall and are at several locations in our community. For more information contact the conservatory at their website info@vcm.bc.cm or 1-866-386-5311 or 250-386-5311.
The current year's work is focused on five initiatives: deliver community forums to identify and build on local ECD strengths; build an effective partnership with School District #62; make presentations to each local municipal council; update information on local ECD services, and assign key stakeholders to be regular committee participants.
A draft inventory of community assets is available, and your input is important. You can contact stephanie@playvictoria.org
